Ever wonder what man is? He has a body, does he have a soul or spirit or both? Paul and the Psalmist said.
“What is man that You are mindful of him,
or the son of man that You care for him?
You have made him a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
And set him over the works of Your hands.
You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in that He put all things in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him Heb 2:6-8.
From the start God created man to be like Him and have a relationship with Him, a family relationship.

Gen 1:27 God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. Here, God created man in His image. God is a Spirit, an eternal living Spirit Joh 4:24. He created man, a spirit being, male and female. Man was fashioned after His manner of being. It was the spirit man He gave charge over the earth to, Gen 1:26.
In order for man to take charge of the earth he would need a physical body Gen 2:5. As the plants began sprouting, God made a vessel or body for Adam to cultivate and tend the earth and animals. So in Gen 2:7 The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Spirit + Body + Soul = Man a Living Soul
In Gen 2:7 God formed or made man, not created as in Gen 1:27. Gen 2:7 is where God made a body, for the spirit man created earlier in Gen 1:27. God also molded all animals and birds from the soil in Gen 2:19, but created (planned and designed) them earlier in Gen 1:20-25. He made or molded the body of man and all other creatures using dust from the earth. When God breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils; He blew the spirit man created in the image of God into Adam, making him a living soul 1 Cor 15:45. God did not breathe, “the breath of life”, into any other creature.
Soul + Body = Animal Creatures
God has given everything living, breath to live; it was only man that He breathed His Spirit the “breath of life” into. It is only man, not any other creature, that the LORD God created in His image His likeness, making man a breathing spirit being. When God put the spirit man into a physical body, he became a living soul. Everything living, plants and animals have a soul but it is only Adam (man) that God made a living soul 1 Cor 15:45, Gen 2:7. Created in His likeness and called His children, we were created to know and have a close, intimate and personal relationship with our Creator Father God.
